Hello everyone, my name is _______ and I am excited to have all of you as my audience. Today, I want to share with you my capstone project experience (NURS FPX 4900 Assessment 5 Intervention Presentation and Capstone Video Reflection) and the intervention I presented for Mr. Andrew, a 59-year-old patient suffering from type 2 diabetes. However, I recognize that there is still room for improvement in healthcare technology use. For example, there could be better integration between different technology platforms to allow for more seamless communication and data sharing between healthcare providers. In terms of prospective improvements, there is a growing need for more sophisticated and interconnected healthcare technologies that can improve the delivery of care and patient outcomes.

This includes the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning to help predict and prevent adverse health events, as well as the development of mobile apps that can improve patient engagement and self-management. This article ‘Lessing & Hayman, 2021’ demonstrates that the aforementioned improvements (i.e., introducing EHRs) can bring about better health outcomes for diabetic patients (Lessing & Hayman, 2021).

It is also important to consider the ethical implications of healthcare technology, such as privacy and security concerns, and to ensure that the use of technology is equitable and accessible to all patients (Antonio et al., 2019). As technology continues to advance, it will be important for healthcare professionals to stay up-to-date with the latest developments and leverage them to improve patient outcomes while maintaining high ethical standards.

Health Policies Influence Planning and Implementation of Capstone Project

Health policy played a significant role in the planning and implementation of my capstone project, especially regarding the use of technology in healthcare. The Affordable Care Act (ACA), for example, incentivized the use of electronic health records (EHRs) to improve care coordination and patient outcomes, which I incorporated into my project by leveraging technology such as telemedicine, mobile apps, and remote monitoring to improve communication with Mr. Andrew and his healthcare providers.

The American Nurses Association (ANA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have a significant influence on healthcare policies and practices in the United States (Faherty et al., 2020). During the planning and implementation of my capstone project, I was guided by the ANA Standards of Practice for Diabetes Nursing and the CDC guidelines for Type 2 Diabetes Management. These policies provided a framework for my interventions, ensuring that they were evidence-based and aligned with current best practices.

Moreover, my capstone project contributed to policy development by highlighting the potential benefits of incorporating technology into diabetes type 2 management. By demonstrating the effectiveness of these strategies in improving patient outcomes and reducing healthcare costs, my project provided evidence to support the incorporation of similar interventions in future health policy decisions.

Nurse’s Role in Policy Implementation and Development

As a baccalaureate-prepared nurse, my role in policy development and implementation involves advocating for evidence-based interventions that improve patient outcomes and reduce healthcare costs. Although, many healthcare policies are already existing but their implementation lies in the hands of nurses. I must stay informed of current health policies and contribute to policy development by providing evidence-based recommendations based on my clinical experience and research. By advocating for policies that prioritize patient-centered care, nurse-led interventions, and the use of technology to improve healthcare delivery, I can make a significant contribution to policy development and implementation. 

Capstone Project Outcomes Matched with Initial Predictions

The intervention implemented was successful in achieving the desired goals of improving Mr. Andrew’s glycemic control, enhancing his adherence to medications and dietary modifications, and increasing his knowledge and skills related to diabetes self-management. There was a significant improvement in Mr. Andrew’s HbA1c levels, and he reported an overall improvement in his quality of life, as evidenced by his increased satisfaction and confidence in managing his diabetes.

The project’s potential contribution to policy development lies in its alignment with the goals and recommendations of organizations such as the American Nurses Association (ANA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in promoting evidence-based diabetes care, patient-centered care, and care coordination. By demonstrating the feasibility and effectiveness of implementing such interventions in real-world settings, the project can contribute to the development of policies and guidelines that prioritize patient outcomes and quality of care.

Generalizability and Best-practice Potential

In terms of generalizability, the intervention can be adapted and applied to other patients with type 2 diabetes, as it is evidence-based and incorporates best practices in diabetes care, including individualized care plans, care coordination, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The use of health technology, such as EHRs and telemedicine, can further enhance the intervention’s efficiency and effectiveness in improving patient outcomes and reducing healthcare costs.

Moreover, the project focused on evidence-based practices of medication adherence, dietary modifications, and exercise, resulting in improved glycemic control and quality of life for the patient. The incorporation of health technology, such as telehealth, improved communication and care coordination, which can be applied in other healthcare settings (Van Cleave et al., 2022). Overall, the success of the intervention and the integration of evidence-based practices and health technology show its potential to improve patient outcomes and healthcare delivery.

In conclusion, my capstone project focused on implementing an evidence-based intervention to improve the glycemic control and quality of life of a patient with type 2 diabetes.
